07/01/1797 The modern Italian flag is first used

The first Italian tricolor appeared during the Napoleonic era with the Flag of the Cisalpine Republic, which supplanted Milan after Napoleon's victorious army crossed Italy. The colors were red and white, which were the colors of Milan's flag; and green, which was the color of the uniform of the Milanese civic guard.
