25/10/1888 Long-distance aviator

US navy officer Richard E. Byrd was born. He developed two air navigation instruments: bubble sextant and a drift indicator. Byrd made a number of long-distance flights. He claimed that his expeditions had been the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. It is, however, not sure whether he reached the North Pole.
