04/01/1989 Gulf of Sidra incident between America and Libya

John F. Kennedy was sailing toward the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Two United States Navy F-14 Tomcats shot down two Libyan MiG-23 Floggers which the Americans believed were attempting to engage them. Libya accused the U.S. of attacking two unarmed reconnaissance planes which were on a routine mission over international waters.
