American palaeontologist Othniel Marsh was born. He described many iconic dinosaur species, for example Triceratops or Stegosaurus. He also found bones of early horses and flying reptiles. Marsh competed with other palaeontologist Edward Drinker Cope in 1870s to 1890s. This period is known as the Bone Wars.
