Ong Teng Cheong, was a Singaporean politician and architect who was the fifth President of Singapore from 1993 to 1999. Prior to taking office as President. Formerly a member of the country's governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was the Cabinet Minister, Senior Minister of State for Communications & Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore and was Singapore's first directly elected president, serving a six-year term from 1 September 1993 to 31 August 1999.
