Theravāda is the most ancient branch of Buddhism still extant today, and the one that preserved the teachings of Gautama Buddha in the Pāli Canon, its doctrinal core. The Pāli Canon is the only complete Buddhist canon which survives in Pāli, a classical Indic Language which serves as both sacred language and lingua franca of Theravāda Buddhism. Another feature of Theravāda is its tendency to be very conservative with regard to matters of doctrine and monastic discipline. As a distinct school of early Buddhism, Theravāda Buddhism developed in Sri Lanka and subsequently spread to the rest of Southeast Asia.
