A tribute to Professor Christiaan Barnard by Netcare

Christiaan Barnard was a South African surgeon. In 1967 he made the first human to human heart transplant in history. The patient, Louis Washkansky, died of pneumonia. It was a consequence of a therapy by immunosuppressants. Barnard also invented therapy for intestinal atresia (a malformation of the intestine).
