The Soviet Union launched its space shuttle. It was called Buran, which means cold wind from the north-east. Buran made just one unmanned spaceflight and landed in Baikonur Cosmodrome. The vehicle was very similar to the American space shuttle. The whole programme was canceled after the dissolution of the USSR.
