Equation of State

Dutch theoretical physicist Johannes Diderik van der Waals made many contributions to physics and chemistry. He discovered the equation of state, which describes relationships between properties of mater such as temperature, volume, and pressure. Van der Waals forces, weak but important interactions between atoms and molecules, are named after him.
