George Everest was Welsh geographer. Earth’s highest mountain is named after him, although he did not want it. He was in charge of Great Trigonometric Survey of India which aimed to precisely map Indian subcontinent. It included an exact measurement of the three highest peaks in the Himalayas. The other two were K2 and Kangchenjunga. The latter was considered the highest mountain in the world before the survey.
