13/10/1987 Father of the transistor dies

American physicist Walter Brattain invented the transistor in 1947, together with John Bardeen and William Shockley, in Bell Labs. Their invention opened the door to modern computers and other electronic devices. Brattain's main field of scientific interest was the physics of surface states.
