The Strange Tale of Horace Wells

He pioneered the use of anaesthesia in dentistry, specifically nitrous oxide (laughing gas). He saw a demonstration of anaesthetic effects of the laughing gas on an exhibition. Next day Wells tested the gas on himself during a tooth extraction. He did not feel pain and became a great proponent of the nitrous oxide.
