25/01/1917 Belgian physical chemist Ilja Prigogine is born

He is noted for his work on dissipative structures. Dissipative structure is a thermodynamically open system which is operating out of, and often far from, thermodynamic equilibrium in an environment with which it exchanges energy and matter. The systems studied by Prigogine were somewhat similar to the living cells, although they were inanimate.
