It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It was first found near Pfizer laboratories in a soil sample yielding the soil fungi Streptomyces rimosus. Its chemical structure was described by American chemist Robert B Woodward. Oxytetracycline derivative, doxycycline, is one of the most used antibiotics today.
