Crystallographers in Conference 1965: Kathleen Lonsdale
She proved that the benzene ring is flat by using X-ray diffraction methods to elucidate the structure of hexamethylbenzene. The benzene molecule is composed of six carbon atoms joined in a ring with one hydrogen atom attached to each. Kathleen Lonsdale also worked on the synthesis of artificial diamonds.
