Malcolm Scott Carpenter was an American naval officer and aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, astronaut, and aquanaut. He spent 4 hours, 56 minutes, 5 seconds on the Low Earth Orbit. His mission was focused on science. He studied liquids in weightlessness, photographed Earth and unsuccessfully attempted to observe a flare fired from the ground.
