Nikola Tesla was born in a village of Smiljan, in Austrian Empire, nowadays a mountainous region of Western Lika in Croatia. Tesla received an advanced education in engineering and physics. He emigrated to the US where he started developing electrical and mechanical devices, eventually designing the modern AC system.
