Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. The first recorded Christmas celebration was in Rome. Christmas played a role in the Arian controversy of the fourth century. The feast was introduced to the Eastern Roman Empire after the death of Emperor Valens, who favored the Arian heresy, in 378.
