The story began with a farmer, who reported a sick sow, which was later diagnosed with the foot-and-mouth disease. The virus spread, and as a result about 442,000 animals were slaughtered and the outbreak cost about £370 million. Most of the cases occurred in North-West Midlands and North Wales.
