Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama passed the mouth of the Great Fish River, where his predecessor, Bartolomeu Dias, turned back. He entered waters never entered by Europeans and became the first to sail along Africa's East Coast. He decided to call it “Natal,” which meant “the birth of Christ” in Portuguese.
