German physicist and chemist Johann Wilhelm Ritter read about William Herschel’s discovery of “heat rays (infrared radiation)” and wanted to find the opposite – some kind of cooling rays. He found something else, which he called the “chemical rays.” It was the ultraviolet light. Ritter also discovered electrochemical cell and electroplating.
