17/12/1797 Doorbell inventor is born

Joseph Henry was an American physicist. His main area of interest was electromagnetism. He discovered the self-inductance independently of Michael Faraday. Henry invented what is today known as the doorbell and electric relay. He served as the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The SI unit of inductance, henry, is named in his honor.
