American self-taught chemist Charles Goodyear was born. When searching for a more stable rubber, he invented the process of vulcanisation. His new rubber was immediately s adopted to multiple applications, for example for manufacturing tires or footwear. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is named after him.
