The International Geophysical Year ended. It was multinational scientific project focused on Earth sciences. Research topics were: the aurora, airglow, cosmic rays, geomagnetism, gravity, etc. Both Soviet Union and USA launched their first artificial satellites during the year. IGY marked the restoration of science exchange between East and West.
