18/12/1898 "Jeantaud" sets the 1st officially land speed record
18th December 1898: The world's first officially recognised land speed record is set
Count Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat won the 1st-speed trials in Achères, France with Jeantead electric vehicle and set the 1st-speed record for automobiles. The vehicle achieved an average speed of 39 mph. The speed contest was organized by the French magazine called La France Automobile.
