Destructive Volcano eruption in Heimaey Iceland in January 1973
Eldfell is a volcanic cone just over 660 ft high on the Icelandic island of Heimaey. Its eruption caused a crisis for the island and almost led to its permanent evacuation. The volcanic ash destroyed around 400 homes. After the eruption, the islanders used heat from the cooling lava flows to generate electricity.
