US Army private David Lewis died because of influenza. The virus strain was H1N1. It was related to the Spanish flu, which killed around 50 to 100 million people worldwide after the Great War. The outbreak led to massive immunization, which, however, caused 25 deaths and 500 cases of Guillain–Barré syndrome.
