07/02/1804 American inventor John Deere is born

He is often credited with the invention of the tractor. He did not invent it. But he invented the steel plow, or at least the first commercially successful one. In his time, the plows were made of cast-iron. This was ineffective, especially in the tough prairie soil of Illinois, where Deere lived. He produced and sold his first plow in 1837.
