He was most interested in sound and waves. He criticised the Newtonian physics, which later led to the discovery of the theory of relativity. The ratio of one's speed to that of sound is named the Mach number in his honour. Ernst Mach greatly also influenced the philosophy of science. He was an atheist and socialist.
