American microbiologist Selman Waksman announced the discovery of a new antibiotic – the streptomycin. It was discovered by his PhD. student Albert Schatz in a research project financed by Merck and Co. Waksman later received Nobel prize in Physiology or medicine. Some people accused Waksman him of playing down the role of Schatz.
