23/02/1884 Polish biochemist Casimir Funk is born

Original Polish spelling of his first name is Kazimierz, but it is commonly anglicized as Casimir. He is usually considered the first to credit the concept of vitamins (short for vital amines). He proposed that diseases such as beriberi, scurvy, rickets and pellagra were caused by lack of these vital substances in the diet.
