Howard Hanson was an American composer, conductor, and music theorist. For 40 years he was a director of the Eastman School of Music. In 1944, he won a Pulitzer Prize for his Symphony no. 4, subtitled Requiem. His Song of Democracy was performed at the inaugural concert for incoming U.S. President Richard Nixon.
