28/03/1935 Robert Goddard uses gyroscopes to control a rocket

How a gyroscope guides a rocket

How Early Inertial Guidance Worked

The main part of a gyroscope is a spinning wheel. Its rotation is unaffected by tilting or rotation of the machine in which the gyroscope is mounted. This allows using a gyroscope for a spatial orientation. Goddard used it for the first time in his rocket designated the A-5. It flew vertically to an altitude of 1.46 km.
