The Thames Still Has Some 19th Century Stink In It
Sir Joseph Bazalgette
He is known as the creator of a sewer network for central London. He did it in response to the Great Stink event of 1858 in which the hot weather exacerbated the smell of untreated human waste and industrial effluent that was present on the banks of the River Thames. Bazalgette’s sewer network freed London from cholera.
