The premiere of Ebony Concerto by Woody Herman's band First Herd took place in Carnegie Hall in NYC. Walter Hendl was chosen as conductor for the event. It was a jazz-based version of concerto grosso, a form of baroque music, with a blues as the slow movement. Stravinsky dedicated the work to band's leader – Herman.
