Tchaikovsky entrusted the production of the premiere to the students of Moscow Conservatory, believing it required maximum simplicity and sincerity. Opera was conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein and premiered at the Maly Theatre, in Moscow. It is based on Pushkin's novel in verse of the same name.
