Woodward is known for his syntheses of complex organic substances, sometimes called Chuck Norris of organic chemistry. He synthesized antimalarial quinine, the steroids cholesterol, and cortisone, vitamin B12, lysergic acid, ergonovine, etc. Woodward also established the structure of antibiotics aureomycin and terramycin.
