Nirenberg was one of the people who broke the genetic code. Proteins are chains of twenty basic amino acids. Their order is written in DNA. Every acid is coded by a group of three bases. Nirenberg together with Heinrich Matthaei discovered first association of such triplet with actual amino acid.
