Sir Douglas Mawson was an Australian geologist, academic, and one of the first people to explore Antarctica. Mason participated in the Terra Nova expeditions of Ernest Shackleton, Nimrod and Robert Scott. With Edgeworth David and Alistair Mackay, he was the first to reach the summit of Mount Erebus, the second highest volcano in Antarctica, and trek to the South Magnetic Pole, which at that time was accessed over land.
