No-One Knows Who Got To The North Pole First
Departure of Robert Peary and the Roosevelt from New York 1905
Peary is best known for claiming to have reached the geographic North Pole in 1909. However, his primacy was called into question and widely debated in contemporary newspapers, along with a competing claim by Frederick Cook, another American explorer. According to modern research, Peary probably never reached the pole, though he may have been as close as 60 miles from it. During his lifetime he made five polar expeditions.
