Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer and poet who was born in Nishapur in northeastern Iran in 1048 AD. He composed a calendar which proved to be a more accurate computation of time than that proposed five centuries later by Pope Gregory XIII and wrote a book on algebra that was used as a textbook in Persia until the 21st century. In geometry, he studied cubic equations and contributed to the theory of parallel lines.
