Coriolis is famous because of his discovery of a force that acts on objects that are in motion relative to a rotating reference frame. For clockwise rotation, the force acts to the left of the motion of the object, for anticlockwise rotation to the right. Coriolis was also the first to use the term "work" in a physical sense.
