He is known for his discovery of neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Dale also showed that acetylcholine is released after electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve. He proved that nerve stimuli are transmitted both chemically and electrically. Dale also first described what is now known as the Dale's principle in neuroscience.
