New steel suspension pedestrian bridge for over the Thames river in London, England, behaved unexpectedly. As the first few thousand people crossed it, it developed an unexpected and potentially dangerous lateral wobble. The design did not consider the forces associated with human walking. The bridge had to be closed and modified.
