Mel Brooks was born in Brooklyn, NYC to Jewish parents. After a year at college, he was drafted into the army where he served in 78th Infantry Division during WWII. After the war, Brooks started his career as a comedian, playing in various shows in the US. He also became a successful film director during 70s.
