He was the first man from China in space. Liwei was launched on the morning of 15 Oct 2003, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert. His spacecraft was Shenzhou 5, Chinese clone of the Soviet/Russian Soyuz. Liwei completed 14 earth orbits and then returned to Earth, landing safely on the central grasslands of Inner Mongolia.
