The road from Paris to Rouen became the venue of a historical event when the 1st competitive motor race took place there. The newspaper Le Petit Journal organized the 126 km long race with 102 entrants. The fastest petrol powered car was driven by Albert Lemaítre. Steam powered cars were not eligible to win the premier prize.
