19/07/1930 Richard E. Byrd returns from his first Antarctic expedition

The enterprise involved two ships and three airplanes. Byrd and his men undertook photographic and geological surveys. Byrd was promoted to the rank of rear admiral by a special act of Congress during the expedition. He was only 41 years old, which made him the youngest admiral in the history of the United States Navy.
