24th July 1911: Machu Picchu 'rediscovered' by US explorer Hiram Bingham III

Bingham was led to the city by a local farmer. He found a name of another foreigner, Agustín Lizárraga, on the wall in the city. It was written in 1902. Bingham is, however, considered a scientific discoverer of the site. Machu Picchu is often referred to as The Lost City of The Incas. More than an ordinary city it was an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti.
