The experiment took place at the Beckman Research Institute in Duarte, California. The research was conducted by Arthur Riggs, Keiichi Itakura and Herbert Boyer. They synthetized copies of human insulin genes and inserted them in the genome of the Escherichia coli bacteria. The vast majority of insulin currently used worldwide is made in the same way.
